Janice is a self taught vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist originally from Joshua Tree, California who has resided in San Francisco, California since 1995. She currently lives in San Jose with her partner in crime Josh Cadwising, their son Jaden, and of course, their fabulous cat Marzipan. As a teenager, she suffered an rare degenerative muscle disease that characterizes itself in muscle weakness and immobility. She spent much of her time composing music as well as painting and drawing during her 2 year rehabilitation. Her music is composed by recording layers of herself on multiple instruments, and serves as a creative outlet for exploring the unknown. She uses ProTools to compose her pieces using a digital version of tape editing techniques pioneered in the 1940-1960's. In the past few years, she has become increasingly interested in multi-sensory art, specifically the correlation between sound and physical movement as well as bringing inanimate objects or conceptual images to life through sound. She is currently working on The Smiths Project, a year long endeavor to cover every song by The Smiths using only layered-vocals for instrumentation. © Janice Whaley 2009
